Ayer, 15 de Julio la Sociedad contra la Discriminación por Orientación Sexual (SASOD, por sus siglas en inglés) de Guyana presentó en una conferencia de prensa el reporte sobre la situación de los Derechos Humanos de las personas LGBTI en ese país enviado para el Exámen Periodico Universal y redactado en colaboración con Akahatá y presentado junto a la Iniciativa por los Derechos Sexuales el mes pasado.
El reporte, que SASOD tituló "En la Isla del Diablo", describe las violaciones a los Derechos Humanos de las personas LGBT de ese país y cuenta con recomendaciones al gobierno de Guyana que deberán ser tenidas en cuenta durante el Exámen. Éste fue enviado el mismo día que el Ministro de Finanzas Juan Edghill hiciera declaraciones en el programa radial Hard Talk descibiendo la homosexualidad como "destructiva, corropida e insalubre" y que no debe ser tolerada en la sociedad de Guyana.
Entre las recomendaciones efectuadas SADOD solicita la derogación de las secciones del Códido Penal que criminalizan las relaciones sexuales privadas y consentidas entre personas adultas del mismo sexo/género y la versimenta de personas de acuerdo a los convencioalismos de género (cross-dressing).
